- 21 Years of age is the legal provision
- 3 Years of driving experience needed. LOOK AT YOUR LICENSE!! Did you move recently? Update your license? Look at the date. If it is not 3 years or older, a driving history verification (cost vary by state) will be needed unless you have your old license.
More Important Driver Requirements
- Car insurance must be current and in your name. Make sure your insurance company covers rideshare. Some companies do not and will drop you if they find out.
- Have registered car for driving. The vehicle doesn’t have to be registered in your name.
- Background checks are mandatory.
Background Check Information
- Have a clean driving record.
- You will need to pass the background check.
Background checks are done by a reputable 3rd party company. It can be days or weeks depending on volume.
Passing the background check: A look into your past 7 years, and what you cannot have on record.

Car Requirements
To drive you will have to have a specific vehicle that meets their car requirements.
UberX vehicle requirements:
- A sedan with 4 doors. Has to seat up to 4 passengers, not including the driver.
- 12 years old operational vehicle or newer. (car year needs vary by city)
- Vehicle registered
- Marked taxi, or salvaged vehicles are not permitted.
- The car’s registration will have to be current.

What to do if you do not meet driver requirements!
What do you do if your application to drive gets denied? Not every driver is accepted. Here are some reasons they may not approve you.
You are under the required age of 21.
They require all their drivers to be 21 years old.
You are missing a Social Security Number, or not a legal U.S. working resident.
If you are an immigrant, I suggest consultation with an immigration lawyer. Your visa document may prohibit you from working in the U.S.
The background check administered was NOT passed.
If they decline your application due to a failed background check, request a copy for yourself! It is important to see what is keeping you from making money as a driver. If what is listed is correct it will take about 7 years to be removed off your record. If what is on your record is incorrect let them know.
Your car does not qualify.
If your vehicle does not meet the guidelines for rideshare, UPGRADE! You don’t have to buy a new car, used is just fine. They say that research shows the sweet spot to buy a used car is a car that is 4 years old. If it is 2019 you want to look for a car that is a 2015 etc. The depreciation level is not as bad at that point and the car is still relatively new and should last a long time. The payment for your used vehicle will be offset by the money you earn with rideshare weekly.
